"selftext": "Hi everyone,\n My wife and I recently moved into a furnished Airbnb-style apartment in Dubai. Within the first day, we both started getting itchy eyes, itchy throats, runny noses, and a general feeling of irritation. I have seasonal allergies, but my wife doesn't usually react like this, so it's strange that we're both experiencing the same symptoms.\n We've noticed a clear pattern:\n We spend several hours outside and feel completely fine.\n Within 5–10 minutes of coming back to the apartment, the symptoms return.\n Turning the central AC on seems to make things worse.\n We borrowed a small Honeywell HEPA air purifier, and it noticeably reduced our symptoms while it was running.\n We reported it to the rental company, and they had the AC cleaned today. Unfortunately, the symptoms are still there. There's also a slight musty/sewage smell in one of the bathrooms, but the rest of the apartment smells normal.\n At this point, I'm wondering if it's something else in the apartment, such as mould, dust in the furnishings, or another indoor air quality issue.\n My questions are:\n Has anyone experienced something similar in a furnished rental or Airbnb in Dubai?\n What else should I ask the rental company to inspect besides the AC?\n If they refuse to investigate further or fix the issue, what are my rights as a tenant in Dubai? Can I request another apartment, terminate the booking, or seek compensation if the apartment is affecting our health?\n I'd really appreciate any advice from anyone who's dealt with a similar situation. Thanks!",

"selftext": "Hi, my sister has got employment as a teacher in GEMS Winchester School, Jebel Ali. Although the school is not reviewed very highly, from the few reviews I saw, the pay is decent, along with travel and accommodation covered for my sister. \n We don't have any contacts or relatives in the UAE so we have relied on the official communications and the documents from the school to verify the job. So far, it all seems in order. A couple of distant people we've been able to ask have said these things seem in order. \n Although UAE is fairly safe, I still have heard of fake jobs and, worse, fronts for human trafficking. We are not as worried about that now, with all the communication we've got from the school. \n Today, my sister received a mail on accomodation and the first major red flag appeared. The school, which is in Jebel Ali, is providing accomodation in Majan which is almost 30 kms (20 odd miles) away from the school. And that would've been fine, too, but they said they have provided her an accomodation in Condor Fortuna. Upon investigation, we found out the building/society doesn't even exist, yet, and is still under construction. Is this a clerical error simply or signs of a bigger issue? Condor houses, too, appear to be high end and I'm thinking why would a teacher be given a massive studio apartment as an accomodation over a simple one bedroom house. These are the major red flags I have noticed. Could someone please assist with this?\n Thank you.\n Edit: I have tried to get in touch with Mohre but they have been down for quite some time now. No reply on my email sent almost a week ago, as well.",

The driver came out of the car, and while I was calling the rental company, I told them to call the police to get the report. They ended up saying that they were in a hurry, and asked to pay them at least 500 dirhams on the spot, and I didn’t have cash. They asked for my number, I gave it to them, and they texted their bank account details right away, and kept pushing me to send the money, as they were at a service center. I told them to file a police report, so both could get insured, and they stopped replying. \n I am assuming they really didn’t want the police involved. \n Now my question is, I didn’t get an add on insurance, and any damage will be covered by me according to the contract, the paint and polish will cost me 450 at a 3rd party shop, because I still didn’t notify the rental company, but then, the headlight has a small line fracture, and they are asking for 3-5k, which is currently out of my budget🫠 \n Any suggestions on how I should deal with this? How much will the rental company charge me for this if I only repair the scratches and leave the headlight as is? I have no idea how I should approach this case.",

After that, we never received an approval email, SMS, WhatsApp, phone call, or any request for the next step. We assumed the typing centre would contact us if anything else was needed.\n Recently, we discovered that the application had actually been approved and that an entry permit had been issued, but it eventually expired because the process was never completed. As a result, our son accumulated around AED 12,500 in overstay fines.\n Last week, the typing centre submitted a new application, and they were able to send us the original approved entry permit from the December application. This surprised us because neither my husband (the sponsor) nor I had ever received it before. As far as we knew, we only had the application submission confirmation.\n We’re now planning to request a fine waiver from GDRFA and are also considering filing a complaint against the typing centre if they can’t explain why the permit was never sent to us or why the process wasn’t completed.\n Has anyone experienced something similar?\n Were your overstay fines waived?\n Does GDRFA take communication failures by a typing centre into account?\n Is it worth filing a complaint against the typing centre, or should we focus solely on the waiver request?\n I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s gone through this or has experience with GDRFA in similar cases. I got my salary directly from USA and in order to comply with local WPS laws, I had to send my salary to our local agent/sponsor who sent my salary back to me in AED. \n There were only 2-3 employees in the company as we are just a showroom to showcase our products, meet/visit, call customers in the UAE and GCC. Gradually, the other 2 left and I was the sole employee in the company. The 49% partner in the Trade License (based in USA and never a UAE resident) abrupty left the company. His passport expired in 2021 but we were still able to renew the Trade License. Only this year, the local sponsor/agent couldn't do it. To make matters worse, my Residence visa was up for renewal and can't renew it without renewing the trade license. \n Local agent tells me that it could take 60 days to transfer trade license partner to a different one. Other times, they ask me to apply for Golden Visa. I do comply but Amer Center advised against it. They also suggested a 5 year Tourist Visa. I would even go ahead and make a new FZ company but due to restrictions on my country of origin, none of those options are open for me. \n I don't really see ANY good options for me. I mean technically, I can and have worked from home since 2019 and Pakistan is a wonderful place to live if you have the means. I live pretty comfortably there but UAE is my \"international\" platform where I can actually meet my customers , apply visas, and order stuff with little duties. Under no circumstances, I considered it my home because it just can't be as a foreigner no matter where you come from. I knew that one day it would be taken away.\n So, I left the country before the visa expired. I didn't want to overstay. All my credit cards have zero debt. I am leaving while respecting the country and myself as well. \n My Labor Contract is valid till 30 Jul and Visa expired on 23 Jul so not sure if I need to \"cancel\" those in the system through someone or will both be automatically cancelled.\n Also, I comply with ALL the requirements of Remote/Virtual Work Visa in flying colors. Is that something that is \"available\" or should I just save my 300-400 AED and say Bye Bye to UAE?\n Thank you for reading all this complicated story. I am pretty sure I made mistakes along the way and I am happy to get constructive suggestions.",

Initially, we wanted to move into the Salik lane towards Dubai, but we noticed a police van nearby. To avoid doing anything wrong, we decided not to change lanes at all.\n The car may have slightly angled towards the lane while we were deciding, but we never crossed into the Salik lane. We stayed in our lane and ended up taking the longer route because we didn’t switch lanes.\n A few hours later, we received a AED 260 fine from Sharjah Traffic for:\n “Non-compliance with the traffic compulsory lane for light vehicles.”\n Has anyone experienced something similar?\n Can an officer issue this fine based on what looks like an attempted lane change, even if the vehicle never actually entered the other lane?\n Is it worth disputing this, or are these officer-issued fines almost impossible to get cancelled?\n Has anyone successfully challenged a similar fine in Sharjah?\n I’m not trying to avoid responsibility if we actually committed a violation, but I’m genuinely confused because we deliberately stayed in our lane to avoid breaking the rules.\n Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated.",

My termination letter states my last working day as 01 July, and my notice period is tied to that date. I can make a request today.\n ILOE says the 30-day window to file starts from the date you ended your relationship with the employer. But I can't actually file a claim while my work permit is still active; that's a requirement. \n So:\n Does the 30 days count from my last working day (01 July)? If so, I only have til 31 July to make a claim.\n Or does it count from the date the permit is actually cancelled and the termination is registered in MOHRE? (My work permit is still active, I checked the MOHRE app).\n I asked the ILOE, but they mentioned \"30 days upon end of relationship with employer.\" \n For anyone who was on garden leave or paid notice with the visa kept active after their last physical working day, what date did MOHRE end up registering, and when did your 30-day window actually open? Did you file from the last working day or from the cancellation date?\n Appreciate any real experience. Thanks.",

I met the published eligibility requirements: Canadian passport - Full-time remote employment with a legitimate company outside the UAE - Met the income requirement - Submitted all required documents (employment verification, bank statements, health insurance, passport, etc.)\n My application was rejected. The only reason given was “general issues.” My brother, who is a UAE resident, called GDRFA to ask for clarification. They told him: they could not disclose the reason, the decision came from “higher up,” and that I cannot reapply.\n I’ve visited the UAE several times before without problems. The only thing I can think of is that I had an overstay during the regional conflict, but at the time there was an official grace period/amnesty due to the situation, and I left legally without outstanding fines.\n Other than that, I have no criminal history, no immigration violations that I’m aware of, and no previous visa refusals.\n Has anyone experienced a similar refusal with no explanation? Were you ever able to find out the reason or resolve it? Is this likely specific to the Virtual Work Visa, or could it indicate a broader immigration restriction?\n Any insight would be greatly appreciated.",

I want to recommend using an outpass (I don’t know the amount of overstay but about 3 years). The way I see it, they can still do their work from another country with the contacts they have made here and in the 3 years they’ve had to fix it they haven’t. I don’t know exactly how it works but I don’t see the point of living here like a illegally. \n They always need help with one thing or the other because they don’t have their own emirates ID. I don’t mind helping and it rarely ever breaches into financial territory but I still feel like you could have a better life if you just leave? Whenever I bring it up she gets defensive as if leaving means admitting defeat. I know after taking the out pass you cannot come back and it takes you directly to your home country if I am not mistaken. \n So then my questions are: - will she be detained for the overstay fines? -will she have to purchase her own ticket back home? - does this affect her ability to use flights that connect in dxb? \n If anyone could answer this or has been in the process themselves shed some light on how it works and how to get the process started I would appreciate it. \n And no, she’s not from a bad country hence why I don’t understand her refusal to go back.",

Especially, after coming back defeated from the UK after spending more than a year living there unable to get a job, and definitely got worse after this war situation.\n I have a good job here and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had here. But there’s always this thought in the back of my mind that none of this is permanent. Everything seems tied to employment. Lose your job, and suddenly your right to live becomes uncertain. You can spend years of your life here, doing well in your career, but at the end of the day, there’s no real path to putting down roots for most people. It makes it hard to picture what my life will look like in some years time. I want stability. I want to know that if I work hard, contribute to society and build a career, I’ll eventually have somewhere I can truly call home, and Dubai is definitely not home for me.\n Because of which, I’ve started looking at countries like Australia, Singapore (raised there since I was a baby) and the UK. They aren’t perfect of course and im aware they have their own challenges of housing crisis and high taxes, but they at least offer a pathway to PR. The idea of having long term security, being able to buy a home without wondering if I’ll have to leave one day, or knowing I can retire in the country where I’ve built my life, is becoming more important to me than earning a tax free salary.\n Edit: I forgot to mention that maybe I’m feeling this way also because of the sentence “everyone is Emirati”. I recently got a job with a company in Dubai Media City, and I’m about to sign the employment contract.\n The issue is that HR told me they cannot process a labor card/work permit because I’m on my wife’s visa. They said they can process work permits for: Golden Visa holders Female employees on their husband’s spouse visa\n But they said they can’t process mine because I’m a male dependent sponsored by my wife.\n I don’t want to cancel my family visa and switch to the company’s visa because it’s a performance-based job, and I’d prefer to keep my residence independent in case the job doesn’t work out.\n Has anyone here (especially a male sponsored by their wife) successfully obtained a work permit while keeping their family visa in Dubai Media City or another UAE free zone?\n Is this an actual Dubai Media City/DDA rule, or is it just the company’s policy or PRO’s understanding?\n Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. The purchases seem to have been made through Carrefour, and I don’t see any charges on my bank cards. Has anyone in Dubai dealt with someone using their email/account to buy Apple gift cards? Should I report this to Dubai Police, Microsoft, Carrefour, or Apple? Is there a way to trace where the gift cards were sent or redeemed?\n Any advice would be appreciated. The staff were friendly, happy, and actually helped us with the menu.\n The bill came to about AED 340 for two people, including dessert. Nothing fancy.\n When the waiter brought the card machine, I asked him to make it AED 375 so the extra could go to him as a tip.\n He quietly said, \"Don't bother. I won't get any of it.\" That caught me off guard. He punched into 340 and nothing more. I paid.\n I happened to have an AED 50 note, so I asked if he could break it. He told me that even cash tips are collected by the restaurant and the staff don't get to keep them. He simply said, \"We haven't received any tips for months.\"\n What is going on!?\n I understand if restaurants pool tips and split them between the front of house and kitchen staff. That seems fair. But accepting tips from customers and then not paying them out for months feels completely different.\n I also get that times are tough for some businesses and the region has been through a lot recently. But that's not an excuse. Restaurants should be paying their bills from the food and drinks they sell, not from money customers intended for the staff.\n People leave tips because they think they're rewarding the people who looked after them, not adding to the restaurant's bottom line.\n I don't tip everywhere, but when it's proper sit-down service and someone genuinely improves the experience, I'm more than happy to leave something.\n I felt awful for the guy. He wasn't looking for sympathy. He was trying to save me the money.\n Is there anywhere in Dubai where something like this can be reported anonymously without putting the waiter at risk?\n I'm deliberately not naming the restaurant because I don't want management figuring out who spoke to us. I'm just trying to understand whether this is normal or if there's somewhere this should be reported.\n TL;DR: Tried to tip a waiter after a great meal. He told me not to bother because staff haven't received any tips for months and even cash is taken by the restaurant. Is this normal in Dubai, and is there a way to report it anonymously without putting the waiter at risk?",

The owner has moved funds from UAE already and is literally living in the office these days. He moved his family also outside the country. He has staff salary pending for like 2 months. I have salary due of around 25k+ AED. Company hasn’t paid me since May. And there are many others who haven’t been paid for same time frame. So my questions are, 1. What are my chances of getting the money. 2. Where all can I report what is happening in the company with the staff? 3. Where all can report about the fraud that is happening? 4. Is there anybody who can personally help me to get my money out?\n As additional information. No I am not in the employment visa. Because I saw all these issues and decided not to take the company visa. I worked for like 4.5 months. And stopped going to office from last week. My salary is 13k AED per month. I have mostly all documentations that can prove above said points.\n Please advice",

"selftext": "Hey everyone,\n Just wanted to share my recent experience with Noon as a heads-up, especially if you're buying branded products from them.\n I ordered a Seiko 5 Sports (SRPD57K1) as a gift. The listing used official Seiko branding and photos, so I had no reason to think anything was wrong.\n When the watch arrived, a few things immediately looked suspicious:\n The caseback had \"JEWELS\" misspelled as \"JEWEB.\"\n The box said \"Made in China,\" even though this model uses Seiko's in-house automatic movement, which is made in Japan.\n There was a noticeable gap between the bracelet and the case.\n The dial markings and serial formatting didn't look like a genuine Seiko.\n Even the warranty card appeared to be non-genuine..\n I contacted Noon the same day, and they asked me to send photos. I emailed them everything they requested the next day.\n After that... nothing.\n A couple of days later, I followed up and even sent a formal escalation. I told them I was happy with either:\n A full refund, without returning the watch, because I was concerned it could end up back in circulation if it wasn't identified as non-genuine. or\n A replacement with a genuine Seiko.\n Since then, I've contacted Noon Customer Care five different times.\n Every single time, I've been told:\n \"Our team will get back to you within 24–48 hours.\"\n Not once has anyone actually contacted me.\n On my fourth call, I pointed out that I'd already heard the same promise three times and nobody had ever followed up. The representative simply repeated the exact same line again.\n The 48 hours have now passed, and I still haven't received a call, an email, or any update.\n What worries me most is what I was told next.\n A Customer Success representative said that if their team doesn't deal with the ticket within 48 hours, it can automatically be marked as \"Resolved\" and closed, even if nothing has actually been resolved.\n I immediately replied in writing saying I do not accept my case being closed or marked as resolved because the issue is still completely unresolved.\n To make things worse, my return window closes on 29 July, and there are only a few days left. Instead of actually dealing with the problem, I just keep hearing the same \"24–48 hours\" response over and over.\n I've now filed a formal complaint with Dubai Consumer Rights because I haven't been able to get any meaningful response from Noon.\n I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.\n Have you ever received what looked like a counterfeit branded product from Noon?\n Has your support ticket ever been marked as \"resolved\" even though your issue wasn't actually fixed?\n If so, how did you finally get it sorted?",

We also paid approximately AED 450–500 for a two-year extended warranty.\n After about one year, the dishwasher developed a problem. The machine still switched on and operated, but we could not change the washing programme.\n From the beginning, the technician did not properly inspect or explain the problem. Instead, they immediately tried to convince us to replace the dishwasher with a new one. We were initially told that a repair could take around 40 days, but we said that we were willing to wait.\n I repeatedly asked what was actually wrong with the machine. The technician eventually told me that it was a control-board problem. However, the LuLu manager later told me that it was a motor problem. This conflicting information made me feel that neither the technician nor the manager had clearly identified the fault.\n A few days later, the manager said that the required parts were unavailable because of supply issues related to the war and that the model had been discontinued. LuLu offered us a coupon worth AED 1,900 and insisted that we buy another dishwasher.\n However, we had originally paid around AED 2,800, and similar dishwashers were now selling for approximately AED 3,300. They strongly encouraged us to purchase a Siemens iQ500 for AED 3,999. This meant that we would have to pay around AED 2000 extra.\n They also refused to transfer the remaining extended warranty to the replacement dishwasher. We were told that we would have to pay another AED 450–500 for a new extended warranty.\n The entire experience made me feel that they were more interested in selling us a more expensive dishwasher and another extended warranty than in properly diagnosing and repairing our existing machine. I cannot prove that this was their intention, but the conflicting explanations and pressure to buy a new model made me very uncomfortable.\n Has anyone else had a similar experience with LuLu, Siemens or extended warranties in the UAE?\n Which dishwasher brand and retailer would you recommend for reliable products, available spare parts and good after-sales service?\n UPDATE: we bought bosch series 6 sms6emi38m from sharaf dg time square branch which costs 4070aed with 3 years of extended warranty",

Because their account only accepts AED, the receiving bank automatically rejected the payment.\n Flywire says:\n * The payment was automatically rejected on 3 July. * The funds were automatically returned through the banking system. * They have no SWIFT return reference or proof because the rejection was automatic.\n The problem is that Mashreq Bank has never received the returned funds.\n Mashreq confirmed:\n * The original payment was successfully credited to the beneficiary banking channel. * Their Nostro account has not received any refund. * They opened a SWIFT payment trace, but received no response. * After waiting, they escalated to a SWIFT Recall. * Even now, they say they are still waiting for a response from the beneficiary/correspondent bank.\n What is frustrating is that Citibank London has not responded to Mashreq’s trace or recall requests, and I have also emailed Citi directly with my UETR but haven’t received any meaningful update.\n It’s now been more than 20 days, and nobody can tell me:\n * Where my money is. * Whether it is still being held. * Whether it has already been returned. * Why there has been no response to the SWIFT trace or recall.\n This money was borrowed for my Germany blocked account, and I urgently need it back so I can complete my visa process.\n Has anyone experienced a refund getting stuck at Citibank London or another correspondent bank after a rejected SWIFT payment?\n * How long did your refund take? * Did the SWIFT Recall eventually work? * Did you need to escalate further? * Is there anyone at Citi who actually handles these cases?\n Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated. "selftext": "\n Hey everyone, just wanted to share a recent customer service experience I had with Noon to give others a heads-up when ordering appliances through them.\n I recently ordered a washing machine that explicitly included \"Free Installation\" at checkout. Here is how the timeline unfolded:\n Day 1 (Delivery & First Attempt): The delivery/installation team arrived, but immediately claimed they couldn't install the washing machine unless I paid them 200 AED on the side. I called Noon Support right in front of them, and support confirmed over the phone that installation was indeed free and included. While I was on the call, the technician started trying to bargain with me directly, dropping his offer to 150 AED, then 140 AED. I declined since it was covered by Noon. Support opened a case and told me a specialized team would arrive within 2 days.\n Day 3: Nobody showed up or called. I called support to open a new case.\n Day 4: A second technician arrived, looked at the setup, and claimed he couldn't do the installation either and needed to \"ask management.\"\n Days 4–7: I spent 7 consecutive days following up daily. My cases were repeatedly passed between different support teams and closed without resolution.\n The \"Resolution\": Eventually, Noon support informed me that they would not perform the installation. They told me to handle it myself and offered a 25 AED partial refund for the inconvenience, despite third-party appliance installation in Dubai typically costing around 150 AED.\n To top it off, after I ended up paying out of pocket to get it installed, Noon called back suggesting I should have asked my building's maintenance team to install it instead. For context, this is a brand new building with all proper plumbing/electrical connections fully functional, the outside technician installed it in minutes without any issues.\n After days of runaround, false promises, and absurd excuses, I’ve cancelled my Noon membership and won't be using their service again.\n Has anyone else faced similar issues with their appliance installation services recently?",

The company managing the accommodation went to my employer and said if I didn’t leave then they would evict all the staff.\n So myself and HR had a discussion and HR were sympathetic. In the end it was agreed that I would leave which I did and the other tenancies were renewed. I was entitled to free accommodation as part of my contract but I had to rent for the rest of the year (covered by rent allowance but it cost me a LOT of money to move out).\n Now I’m at the end of my contract and waiting for end of service payment. It was due two days ago and at the last minute they said I had a 1500 fine from the housing company. I very reluctantly agreed to have it deducted from my EoS and everything was signed for payment today.\n First thing this morning I got another call. The housing company had emailed them and there was another 8,000 AED fine that wasn’t recorded on the system. I’m alleged to have thrown a plant at a security guard.\n I didn’t do that, obviously. I would never do such a thing. The security guard was apparently a temp who only worked there for four hours and they don’t know who he was. There is alledged CCTV footage but that shows the security guard handing me, peacefully, a plant that he had been storing in the office for me.\n My company are sympathetic and helpful but the tenancy is in their name and the charges are not against them so they can’t appeal.\n I’ve been to the housing company and they say I have no right of appeal as the tenancy isn’t in my name.\n This is a LOT of money - 9500 AED in total. I don’t understand how a management company can charge as much as this. Surely - if I was guilty of what they say it would be a criminal offence?\n Is there ANYTHING I can do or have I lost this money?",

I checked with my dad if he received a sms with the payment link (he owns the car). But he didn’t. I have been checking for everyday for a ticket to pay for but nothing shows up for my car on the app or the website. Was just wondering if it’s due to auto-deduction from salik?\n Thanks!",

As soon as I noticed it, I blocked the card, reported the transaction to the bank, and raised a dispute. The bank told me the investigation could take up to 90 working days. At the same time, I filed an eCrime report through the Dubai Police app. Today, I received a message asking me to visit Bur Dubai Police Station next week. I’ve never been to a police station before, so I’m feeling a bit nervous. Has anyone been through a similar situation? What usually happens during the visit? Will they just take my statement, or should I expect anything else? Any advice on what documents I should bring would also be appreciated.",

Can you imagine if she actually fractured it?! \n I have already made a report to urban company and they compensated me 30aed. My review has not been reflected in the app so I thought I should do a PSA here just in case they don’t reflect my review.\n Just a PSA to all to make sure your manicurist is not wearing any rings before starting your treatment lest you end up like me!",

After coming back from Friday prayers today, I discovered she'd given birth to five adorable little critters. I fed her and gave her some water, though she was naturally hesistant to let me near her new kittens. I then came back an hour later to discover that she'd moved to another bush and left a kitten back. I tried to re-introduce her to her little daughter, but she rejected her.\n Does anyone have any advice on what to do in this scenario? I've never owned a cat and don't know what to do for this little kitten. I've just bought some KMR to feed it. \n She's honestly the most curious, explorative kitten ever. I thought kittens at one day old were just little noisy milk guzzlers, but she seems to be very inquisitive and her meows are so expressive. I can tell she wants her mother and is hungry. \n Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated. I'm based in Al Garhoud and am not too sure where to go to find KMR milk, so I ordered off amazon",
