"selftext": "I honestly don’t know if anyone else has experienced this, but I’ve been wanting to talk about it because it’s really started bothering me. I’m Emirati and I’ve been trying to adopt a dog in the UAE. I’ve had a few experiences where I’ve genuinely felt like I was being judged or even rejected once my nationality became known. And I’m not saying this to attack rescues or people who work with animals. I actually understand where some of the concerns come from. There are unfortunately stereotypes about Emiratis and how some people think we treat dogs, and I understand that rescues may have come across bad experiences before. But I also think it’s unfair to automatically put me into that category because of my nationality. I LOVE animals. Like genuinely. I’m probably one of the biggest empaths you’ll ever meet when it comes to animals. I currently have a dog. I live alone in a villa. I have the space. I have the financial ability to look after a dog properly. I understand the responsibility involved. I already know what it’s like to have a dog and everything that comes with it. So I honestly feel like I tick the boxes. Even some of the questions that come up during adoption interviews, like “What happens if you relocate?” or “What would you do with your pets if you moved?” or “Would you take them with you?” are things I’ve already thought about. And realistically, because I’m from here, relocating out of the UAE isn’t something I’m planning on doing. But even if circumstances changed, my pets would come with me. They are my responsibility. I’ve even made plans for what would happen to my current dog if something happened to me. I’ve made sure there is someone who would look after her. These are things I genuinely think about because I don’t see animals as something you just own. They’re completely dependent on you. So when I’m answering these questions and explaining my situation, but I still feel like there is some hesitation because I’m Emirati, it’s honestly frustrating. What bothers me most is that I’m actually trying to do something good. I want to give an animal a home. I want to adopt. I want to make a difference where I can. I don’t expect anyone to hand me a dog just because I say I love animals. I completely understand doing proper checks, asking questions, visiting the home, checking finances, lifestyle, work hours, previous experience with animals, all of that. I actually think rescues should be careful about who they give animals to. But judge me based on ME. Not based on what you assume an Emirati person or Emirati family might be like. And I recently came across a TikTok from someone of a completely different nationality who had gone through something similar. They said that they noticed the person interviewing them change their whole manner once they disclosed where they were from. And honestly, I immediately understood what they were talking about. It made me wonder if this is something other people have experienced here too. Maybe it’s not specifically an Emirati issue. Maybe people from certain nationalities are just stereotyped during the adoption process. I’d genuinely like to hear from both sides, especially people who work in rescues. If you’re involved in animal rescue or adoption in the UAE, do you think nationality ever subconsciously affects how potential adopters are perceived? And if you’re an adopter who has experienced something similar, what happened? I’m not looking for a fight. I genuinely love animals and want to understand this better because at the end of the day, there are so many dogs here that need loving homes. I just wish people could look at the person in front of them and the home they’re offering, rather than making assumptions based on nationality and ending that discussion either from when they received the forms or from initial online interview.",

"selftext": "Hello, I enrolled my chid in grade 3 in one of the private Arabic schools. The thinking was so my child can learn Arabic. The issue I am facing is this particular school doesn't have any transportation. I am hesitant to send my child to school through carlifts and it isnt easyt o find one. I wonder if there is any option to home school the child myself or join some online school (Arabic) for a year or two. Suppose I just take my child out of the school and start teaching him at home, once he is ready to go to school by grade 4, will the school ask for completion of grade 3 certificate or allow enrollement based on placement exam. The reason for taking him out now is that without transport it is hard for him to go to school. In year time I will know where I move from my current apartment and will find a school near where I live.",

"selftext": "I live in a one bedroom in liwan all by myself and generally have a low usage of electricity and my AC isn’t on all the time and my apartment is chiller free so the electricity comes on the dewa bill Last month I was shocked to get a dewa bill of 716 and this month it went up to 737, this is because my electricity is now costing me 450-470 derhams when it was always 200 or under! I told my maintenance to check my electricity meter and they did that for a few days then said nothing is wrong I called dewa and they said they can bring someone to check if the meter is at fault or not but that would cost me 170-500 derhams just to check and I only won’t pay if it’s not their fault (I assumed building maintenance can just do that for free) I don’t know what the issue is! Has anyone ever faced it? Look at the electricity graph they just soared the last 2 months and I haven’t changed anything in the house Even if I bring dewa they can’t identify the problem and I’ll just pay money for nothing Please advise",

During the viewing, the agent told us that no one was cooking in the kitchen, which was one of the reasons we decided to move in.\n Three days later, we found out that other tenants are running a food business from the kitchen. They cook from around 6 AM–12 PM, then again from 3 PM onwards, leaving us almost no time or space to use the kitchen ourselves.\n They even offered us their monthly food plans, which we politely declined because I can cook for my own family.\n Since then, even trying to boil an egg feels like we're disturbing their business. 😅 We've experienced angry looks and banging in the kitchen after we raised the issue with the landlord's assistant.\n And the biggest concern? HYGIENE. 🚩 I've seen poor food-handling practices, possible cross-contamination, and pests around areas where food is being prepared/kept. If you're planning to buy homemade food from the marketplace, PLEASE check the place and make sure the food is actually being prepared in a clean and hygienic environment.\n I already know some of you will comment: “Just get a 1-bedroom or studio so you won't have these problems!” 😂 I know, I know! But that's not the point. We all have different budgets and circumstances.\n For now, we actually bought an induction cooker and started cooking inside our room. LOL. 😂😭\n I have nothing against their business, but we are also paying for the accommodation and kitchen amenities. We have the right to use them too.\n Please be careful when buying food online or through facebook marketplace. You never really know what goes on behind the scenes.",

"selftext": "Has anyone else noticed the new Imports section on Noon Minutes?\n I’ve always been one of those people who checks different retailers for imported and new products, random international brands and novelty stuff you normally don’t find everywhere in Dubai.\n Recently I got the Noon credit card, so of course I’ve been using Noon a lot more because of the cashback, and I’ve become slightly hooked on the convenience of Minutes 12-15 minutes where I live which every time I get things delivered i think its crazy. \n Whats surprised me is the Imports category. Since I started checking it, the amount of new products being added seems crazy. It feels like they’ve suddenly decided to go all-in on bringing well-known products from the UK, US, Europe and other markets.\n And the prices honestly aren’t that bad either comparing to retailers and adding in the convenience of it, considering you can have the stuff delivered almost immediately instead of hunting around different supermarkets.\n Is this actually something new that Noon is pushing heavily, or have I just never noticed it before because I wasn’t using the platform as much? Also wondering if I’m biased now because the Noon card cashback basically keeps pulling me back onto the app 😂\n Curious if anyone else has noticed the Imports selection growing or has found anything particularly good there. Or any other sites or shops to find novelty stuff that you buy out of impulse when you travel abroad.",

Hoping someone here has a doctor they'd actually vouch for.\n Quick rundown:\n Dermatitis started back in 2020 (went swimming a lot , but stopped years ago and it's still here) Inflammation/tingling mainly on the crown, flaking that's sometimes loose, sometimes sticks to the scalp and forms little bumps The inflammation/tingling on the crown is more recent , started about year or two ago Dermatits was on-and-off for years, but since summer 2025 it's been constant Started using Rosemary water few month back, its wonderful and help calms it down, ( Tea tree oil also works great) but nothing's actually fully fixed it. (I understand its a maintaince thing but its been presistent since summer 2025) I've been to a few dermatologists already and every single one just hands me a shampoo without telling me what's actually causing it. What I want is someone who'll do a proper trichoscopy (magnified scalp exam) and tell me straight whether the inflammation is seborrheic dermatitis vs something else and separately whether there's any hair-thinning/DHT component going on.\n So ideally a dermatologist who also does trichoscopy, or a solid trichologist, someone who diagnoses the root cause instead of selling a package.\n If you've got a doctor or clinic in Dubai you trust for this, please drop the name. Bonus points if they explained things clearly and didn't just upsell treatments. Thanks!",

"selftext": "The other day wanted withdraw money from the Mashreq ATM at Expo metro station. I have a Liv debit card. After putting my PIN and choosing the withdrawal amount, there's a warning that said that Mashreq will charge a 26 AED fee plus the other charges from my bank for using a different ATM (2AED, iirc).\n Of course I'm not paying for that, so I cancelled the transaction and left.\n Then yesterday, I was with a coworker and we were waiting for our other friends at Union metro station. She wanted to withdraw money from the Mashreq ATM, and she's also using LIV. She came back to me pissed cuz she also saw that 26 AED fee warning, and just decided to withdraw some other time.\n Is this a Mashreq-only thing to discourage non-Mashreq people to use their ATMs? Or are all banks doing this now?",

The uni wants me to provide a in-person examination form with a proctor's details, but I'm not sure if those services exist here. I emailed a bunch of universities but they said they don't offer those services. Even emailed the Sharjah library, but they said they don't offer those either.\n Idk what to do. Her room is close to the living room, so I can hear her talking on the phone, eating, watching things, etc. I completely understand that it’s her private time and I don’t care what she does in her room at all. The issue is that when I’m sitting in the living room trying to have some alone time, I can hear everything and I find it hard to fully relax or just be alone I’ve never had a live in housemaid before and I don’t want to be rude so i want to ask, would it be rude or controlling to ask her to keep her door closed when she’s spending time in her room? I feel like it would give both of us more privacy, but I don’t want her to feel uncomfortable or like I’m policing her in her own space. What do you guys think please?\n Update: thanks guys! He's been here since the mid 70s.\n We got approached & given a letter saying my dad has been identified as an old resident and that a local TV station wanted to do an interview as part of a series where they talk about people in the UAE who have significantly contributed to the country.\n We were skeptical but after talking to them, it seemed legit. The production company is legit. The TV station also legit. They said they'd come to the work place and do a small interview of him. We asked if this was a paid thing (because PR firms charge money for this sort of thing.) They said no.\n Dad was happy to feel the acknowledgment as were the rest of us because he is genuinely a hard working person and has spent practically his entire life working here.\n They showed up with all the gear, in shirts with the TV station logo, etc. The interview went well but at the end they demanded 5000 dirhams for a \"Copyright Fee\". The lady who was the producer (and let's just say not an immigrant) was adamant about it too. Whipped out her receipt book and started writing immediately.\n We ended up managing her by saying that our company rules & policy don't allow us to just hand over such a large amount & that we'll have to check with our finance department but she can send us the invoice.\n So we didn't pay & she is obviously still calling daily. So I don't know if this is a scam/scam. (Though I would call it that.) But it's unbelievably unethical to not be upfront about any charges or fees in the beginning, whether verbally or in writing.\n Anyway, I just thought I'd share and let people know about yet another scam that people in the UAE should be aware of.\n (This one is particularly more insidious since it targets older people.)",

Moving to Dubai soon with my partner and our dog and trying to figure out which area would make the most sense for us.\n I’ll be working in JLT and probably won’t have a car for the first few months while I get my UAE licence sorted, so being close to the metro would be ideal, or at least somewhere with a reasonable commute to JLT by taxi.\n Looking at roughly AED 100–120k/year for a 1BR. We’d prefer somewhere walkable and fairly green, with good places to walk the dog, ideally a dog park nearby, plus supermarkets, cafes and the usual everyday stuff within walking distance.\n I’ve been looking at Dubai Marina, The Greens/The Views, Barsha Heights, Downtown and Dubai Hills, but it’s hard to get a real sense of what they’re like to live in. On the map some of them don’t look that far from JLT, but I know that doesn’t necessarily mean much once traffic is involved.\n A lot of people seem to really like Dubai Creek Harbour, and I like the look of it too, but it seems pretty far from JLT for a regular commute, especially without a car. \n I’m also considering JLT itself, but I’ve heard mixed things about some of the older buildings and occasional unpleasant smells from the lakes, so I’d be interested to know how noticeable that actually is in practice.\n Would be great to hear from people who actually live in these areas. Which ones would you consider in my situation? Also happy to hear about any other neighbourhoods I might be missing. Any tips are welcome.",

I received cancellation docs from my old employer, and an E-VISA and Status Change from the freezone. I was told to complete my medical and apply for EID, upload the medical cert/EID registration form to the portal to proceed with Residence Visa stamping.\n I completed the medical, but am unable to apply for a new EID (or renew an EID) on ICP as it says I do not have a current residence visa.\n On the GDFRA portal my E-Visa is showing, but not on ICP.\n Freezone told me to go to Amer Center or other Typing Centre. Both told me they cannot type EID application as ICP is saying I have no Residence Visa.\n Anyone ever face a similar issue and know how to resolve?",

"selftext": "I own a townhouse in a relatively villa community in Dubai and am currently replacing a damaged underground water tank. Once the old tank was completely excavated and removed, we discovered a much bigger issue. The excavation continuously fills with a substantial amount of water. It has been pumped out several times and keeps refilling. The water appears to be entering predominantly from the direction of the common passageway between the two rows of villas rather than from the house itself. The neighbouring villa has also checked and has normal water usage with a functioning underground tank. One explanation being suggested is that the area has a naturally high groundwater table. If that's true, I'm wondering how common this is in Dubai villa communities and how underground tanks are normally protected from it. I'm particularly concerned about whether prolonged groundwater/external water pressure could have contributed to the original tank damage, and whether the community should have drainage/dewatering provisions for this.\n At present I have a huge open excavation continuously filling with water while the contractor and facilities management try to determine the source.Has anyone in a Dubai villa/townhouse community experienced something similar when excavating or replacing an underground water tank?What was eventually found — groundwater, irrigation leak, community water line, drainage issue, etc.? And how was it permanently resolved?Would especially appreciate replies from homeowners, contractors or civil engineers who have dealt with this in Dubai.",

"selftext": "Hey Dubai people, so I have said yes to new job, however after seeing the parking fee which is 15 aed first hour and every other 10 aed, would cost me around 2K aed a month. \n When I told this to my employer, he said okay I want you to work hybrid. ( mind, my job position is mostly online 90% anyway ) and he just wants someone to sit at the office since they are paying for it. So now, I should pay 1K only from my pocket. \n What are your thoughts ? I feel it’s crazy, and RTA parking is in the area but very limited spots.\n Anyone works here and have some tips haha \n Thanks have a great day!",

It’s been three months since the purchase and the car has been in the garage for two months as it’s still under warranty. There is an issue with its transmission and it’s costing me a lot of headache. "selftext": "i havebeen here two years,and am going to have some prob articulating this but i am going to try.\n everyone in dubai is performing a version of their life that is slightly more successful in a very specific way that seems to be culturally mandatory here.\n if we look at the brunch photos, the business class posts and excited to announce linkedin updates, everyone's highlight reel is running at maximum output all the time and because everyone is doing it simultaneously you can never tell who is like genuinely thriving and who is three missed payments from a flight home.\n I have a friend here who drives a range rover and splits groceries from carrefour into multiple transactions to stay under his budget and i have another who lives in JBR, posts beach sunset content daily and told me last month he is technically running at a loss every month because the lifestyle required to maintain the image required to get the clients required to afford the lifestyle is more expensive than the clients pay\n And back home if you are having a hard month you say you are having a hard month, here that admission feels like it carries professional consequences like the performance of success is load bearing for your success and if you drop it even slightly the whole thing becomes less true.\n i have been here long enough to know who in my circle is doing well and who is doing the dubai version of doing well , the people who are genuinely building something here tend to be the quietest about it and the loudest lifestyles are often the most precarious.\n i am trying to sort my financial life in year one tho and have now stopped thinking about it. I got a proper savings account outside the UAE, sorted health insurance beyond the minimum employer cover, figured out gratuity calculations and transferring money through apps now(wise,aspora etc) for remittances and moved excess salary into index funds rather than letting it sit and then put my phone down and focused on working. I think refusing to perform the lifestyle is the best financial decision I can make in this city.\n does anyone else find this dynamic exhausting or have you just fully acclimatised to it?",
